How To Show File Extensions In Windows

How To Configure Windows To Show File Extensions

To set up your PC so that you can view filename extensions, follow the instructions below for the appropriate operating system.

Windows XP

  1. Click on Start
  2. Click on Control Panel (if you are using the Classic Start Menu then you must first point to Settings)
  3. Double-click on the Folder Options icon in Classic View (if you are in Category View and so cannot see the icon, you must first click on "Switch to Classic View")
  4. Select the View tab in the Folder Options window
  5. In the Advanced Settings list, UNCHECK "Hide extensions for known file types"
  6. Click on OK
  7. Close the Control Panel window

Windows 2000

  1. Click on Start
  2. Point to Settings and then click on Control Panel
  3. Double-click on the Folder Options icon
  4. Select the View tab in the Folder Options window
  5. In the Advanced Settings list, UNCHECK "Hide file extensions for known file types"
  6. Click on OK
  7. Close the Control Panel window

Windows 98

  1. Click on Start
  2. Point to Settings and then click on Folder Options
  3. Select the View tab in the Folder Options window
  4. In the Advanced Settings list, UNCHECK "Hide file extensions for known file types"
  5. Click on OK

Windows 95

  1. Open either My Computer or Windows Explorer
  2. From the View menu select "Options"
  3. Select the View tab in the Options window
  4. UNCHECK "Hide MS-DOS file extensions for file types that are registered"
  5. Click on OK
  6. Close the My Computer or Windows Explorer window
